What is an ignition coil?

An ignition coil is just a voltage transformer connecting battery and spark plug, it converts low-voltage(12-14V) into high-voltage(20KV+) to spark plug for igniting air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. Ignition coil and spark plug are really good partners, but influence the lifetime of each other meanwhile.

How to find it in my car?

Normally you can easily see them after opening your engine hoop. If not, find the engine chamber first, then remove the plastic cover (if there is), ignition coils are on the top and rooted into the chamber. Sometime its location will be a little different, which is relative to the engine type on your vehicle.

How ignition coil looks like?

Now most used ignition coil on the engine is like a pen with a big head as below.

Some are similar to below items and its evolutionary aims to make it smaller, lighter under lower cost for consumers.
