    How ST to Control the Quality of Ignition Coils during the R&D phase

    As a critical component of the internal combustion engine's ignition system, an ignition coil undergoes a lot of manufacturing processes. Only by precisely controlling the quality of each process can the high quality of the final product be ensured.

    Because of the engineers' persistent exploration and research, the non-dust workshop, high-end equipment and experienced workers, and the establishment of strict quality inspection mechanisms at each production stage, that ST is able to ensure the ignition coils always maintain highquality.

    During the R&D phase, we need to conduct Thermal Shock Test, High Temp. Endurance Test, Salty Spray Test and Open Load Test in order to verify performance and service life on the ignition coils designed and manufactured by our company.                               

    1. Thermal Shock Test:

    Aimed at testing the adaptability of ignition coils in rapidly changing high and low temperature environments. Place the ignition coil in an environment of -40℃ for 2 hours, then quickly transfer it to 125℃ for another 2 hours. The transfer time between the two temperatures shall not exceed 10 seconds, and this cycle is repeated 50 times. Due to the differences in climate and temperature across various countries and regions, we need to ensure that the ignition coils can work stably under extreme temperatures.

    2. High Temp. Endurance Test:

    Intended to evaluate the performance durability of ignition coils under ultra-high temperatures. Under the conditions of a power supply voltage of 14V±0.1V and an operating frequency of 50Hz±1Hz, the ignition coil is continuously operated in an environment of 125℃±3℃ for 500 hours. This test guarantee that products will have a service life of over 2 years.

    3. Salty Spray Test:

    In order to test the corrosion resistance of ignition coils in a simulated salt-containing atmospheric environment. Place the ignition coils in a specific environment that containing 5% NaCl for 96 hours. This test ensures the performance and service life of the ignition coil in daily operating conditions and even extremely humid conditions.

    4. Open load Test:

    Used to test the high-voltage resistance of ignition coils. At normal temperature, place the ignition coil in a high-voltage state with a test voltage of 14V±0.1V, an operating frequency of 50Hz±1Hz, and a secondary voltage of not less than 30KV, and keep it working for 8 hours. This prevents safety hazards such as breakdown and leakage, serving as a key guarantee for the safe operation of the ignition system.

    Before and after all development ttests, performance data of the test samples is recorded and compared. The performance degradation after the test shall not exceed 10%. At present, the service life of products meeting our company's test standards is equivalent to more than 2 years or 50,000 kilometers.
